NMU Center for Native American Studies

Boozhoo | Greetings! The NMU Center for Native American Studies (CNAS) is an academic department within NMU’s College of Arts and Sciences. The CNAS has been a vibrant center on the NMU Campus since 1996.

The CNAS offers multiple academic programs — including the first-ever baccalaureate degree in Native American Studies in the State of Michigan. The CNAS offers nearly 30 courses specific to the discipline of Native American Studies (some courses are offered online). The CNAS faculty team has expertise in American Indian education inclusion, American Indian representations in media, Indigenous food sovereignty, American Indian arts, literature, and philosophies, and of significant importance, the CNAS seeks to revitalize Anishinaabe language learning and teaching.

The CNAS hosts and/or supports events and activities on the NMU campus that promote the living cultures of Indigenous peoples as well as those events that reinforce the deep relationship between Native peoples and their ancestral homelands.

The CNAS acknowledges that NMU is located upon the ancestral homelands of the Anishinaabe Nation. Marquette is known to the Anishinaabe as Gchi-namebini Ziibing, which refers to a life-sustaining river.
